Arkansas Septic Tank

Q&A
Arkansas Septic Tank Remediation Program

"Working with H2Ozarks to replace our fifty-year old septic system was a blessing both financially and [to our] senses. The people were friendly, professional, and easy to contact. The process was clearly outlined in the online information… Thanks to H2Ozarks we now enjoy our yard without having to smell, or even think about, sewage.”

The Septic Tank Remediation Program provides financial assistance to eligible homeowners in our program area who have a septic system that has been declared as failing by the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH). This program eases the burdensome costs of replacing a septic system by providing financial assistance as grants and zero-interest loans.

A map of Arkansas highlighting several counties in the northwestern region in white, while the rest of the counties are shaded in purple. The county borders and major rivers are visible.

H2Ozarks can offer the following technical and financial assistance to applicants:

  • Funding the repair or replacement through a combination of free reimbursed grant money and zero-interest loans, depending on income level
  • Assisting with septic system evaluation and diagnosis
  • Connecting homeowners with septic professionals
  • Answering questions about the design and permitting process

Eligible homeowners will qualify for a grant and zero-interest loan based on the following income guidelines:

A table shows annual income levels with corresponding percentages for grants and 0% interest loans. As income increases, the grant percentage decreases and the loan percentage increases.

This funding will reimburse homeowners for both design and installation costs (as performed by licensed professionals) up to a total of $30,000 per project. Grant funds are awarded to the homeowner and do not require repayment. Zero-interest loans can be repaid with low monthly payments with up to a ten-year term.

This program is funded by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Division through their Clean Water State Revolving Fund, through federal-state partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

  1. Eligible homeowners must have a septic system that is designated as failing by an ADH Environmental Health Specialist.
  2. Additionally, homeowners must be located in one of these two watersheds:
    1. Beaver Reservoir Watershed (HUC 11010001)
    2. Buffalo River Watershed (HUC 11010005).

You can identify your watershed using the Find My Watershed tool, or contact the Program Manager[jump link to Still Have Questions?] for assistance.

*Not in our program area? If you live in the Illinois River Watershed, there is a similar program managed by the Illinois River Watershed Partnership. Visit their website to learn more.
